1. QR & Barcode Payments
What’s changing:
One of Suica’s biggest upcoming upgrades is teppay, a new QR and barcode payment service being introduced within Mobile Suica. The service is scheduled to launch in autumn 2026, expanding Suica beyond traditional IC card readers.
Once available, users will be able to:
- Pay using QR and barcode payments at participating stores
- Use Suica at additional locations that may not have traditional IC readers
- Access additional digital payment features directly through Mobile Suica
- Use a virtual prepaid card for compatible online purchases
This will make Mobile Suica much more like a complete digital wallet rather than simply a transportation card.

With teppay, users will be able to charge and use significantly larger amounts for QR and barcode payments, with limits of up to approximately ยฅ300,000 depending on the service and account conditions.
This doesn’t mean the traditional Suica transit balance itself is increasing to ยฅ300,000. Instead, teppay adds a separate digital payment layer within Mobile Suica that can be used for larger purchases.

3. Peer-to-Peer Transfers
Another feature planned as part of the teppay rollout is the ability to send electronic money between users directly through Mobile Suica.

The feature is expected to arrive alongside the broader teppay rollout beginning in autumn 2026.
4. Expanded Ticketless Travel Integration
- Suica continues moving toward a more convenient ticketless travel experience, especially for international visitors using Welcome Suica Mobile.
- Travelers can connect with JR-EAST Train Reservation to purchase eligible Shinkansen and Limited Express tickets and link those reservations with their Suica for ticketless travel.
- Welcome Suica Mobile has also continued expanding since its March 2025 launch. In March 2026, JR East added the ability to purchase Suica Green Car tickets through the app, making it even easier for visitors to upgrade their train experience without purchasing a separate paper ticket.
