Nestled along the rugged coastline of Japan’s Kii Peninsula lies a treasure trove of natural beauty, ancient shrines, and authentic cultural experiences. Over three days, I embarked on a journey to discover the enchanting towns of Nachikatsuura, Nachi, and Yunomine Onsen. From mystical shrines to refreshing hot springs, this adventure proved to be a captivating exploration of the Kii Peninsula’s unique charm.
Day 1: Nachikatsuura – Tuna Town and Tranquil Shrines

Our adventure began in Nachikatsuura, a town renowned for its deep connection to the sea. We started the day at the Urashimainari Shrine, perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the ocean. We also explored the intriguing Space Walker attraction, an underwater adventure. From there, we ventured to the Katsuura Gyoko Nigiwai-Ichiba Tuna Market, where we indulged in the freshest seafood, particularly the prized tuna. For those with an adventurous spirit, a visit to 弁天島 Beach Shrine became possible when the tide was low.
Day 2: Nachi – Chasing Waterfalls and Cultural Discoveries

Our second day led us to the charming town of Nachi, where we embarked on a scenic hike to Nachi Falls. Along the 2.9-mile trail, we encountered stunning vistas of the three-tiered pagoda and the majestic waterfall. To capture the best view, we followed a local tip, which led us to a hidden platform near the pagoda. The sight of the falls crashing into the azure waters below was truly mesmerizing. With an entrance fee of 300 yen, we reached the falls’ platform and felt the cool mist on our faces. Nachi Falls left an indelible mark on our journey.
Day 3: Yunomine Onsen – Hot Springs and Sacred Shrines

On our final day, we ventured to Yunomine Onsen, where we were greeted by the soothing embrace of natural hot springs. We embarked on a picturesque hike from the onsen to Kumano Hongu Taisha, a sacred Shinto shrine. The 4.1-mile trail took us through lush forests and offered glimpses into the region’s spiritual heritage. After visiting the shrine, we arrived at Oyunohara, where we marveled at the grandeur of our surroundings. To complete our journey, we took a train back to Kii-Katsuura Station, relishing in the memories of our time in the Kii Peninsula.
Conclusion: My three days in the Kii Peninsula were a tapestry of natural wonders, cultural riches, and unforgettable experiences. From the vibrant tuna markets of Nachikatsuura to the awe-inspiring Nachi Falls and the serene hot springs of Yunomine Onsen, this journey was a testament to the profound beauty and heritage of this hidden corner of Japan. As I left the Kii Peninsula, I carried with me a sense of wonder and gratitude for having explored a place where nature and spirituality intertwine in harmonious splendor.
